Big Black Boots has been selling boots since 1985 and online since 1995. We were the first boot store on the internet! But after 34 years we are retiring.

We've closed our web store. Boot orders still in process will be attended to, and we'll be busy getting those orders out to customers as they're completed. We're still here to support our loyal customers.

We're keeping the website up along with the order forms. These contain a lot of information which can help when you order directly from Wesco or Dehner. But the order forms no longer accept orders or payment info.

Our email address at will be kept active so customers can contact us in the future.

Our customer lists and records will NOT be for sale.

Thanks for being such great customers over the years. It's been a pleasure helping you get into great boots that fit well.

Size / Width Tables for Custom Boss Engineer Boots

Sizes available when using Wesco's standard "new" last ( #9165 ) with the sleeker toe
and 2" / 50 mm logger heel.

Boots made with this last can have heels made 1 lift (¼" / 6.4 mm) lower but no lower.
To achieve a "low heel" which is 2 lifts (½" / 13 mm) lower, you need to choose the
"low heel" #65 last which is designed for "low heels" instead of logger heels.

The table above shows the U.S. men's size range for the custom Wesco Jobmaster, Highliner, Boss and Firestormer boots built with the standard "new", "sleeker" #9165 last. The boots can be made in any size / width combination shown in green.

Sizes available when using Wesco's traditional "old" Last ( #9109 ) with the "bump" toe
and 2" / 50 mm logger heel.

This is the last we use if possible unless you request the new "sleek" toe last or a low heel.
Boots made with this last can have heels made 1 lift (¼" / 6.4 mm) lower but no lower.

Sizes available when using Wesco's low heel last ( #65 ) with the sleeker toe
and 1½" / 38 mm low heel.

This is the last used when you request a low heel. Low heels are 2 lifts (½" / 13 mm) lower
than Wesco's standard 2" logger heel. Boots made with this last fit about a half size large.
So you need to order boots made with this last ½ size smaller than you would normally
order for a Wesco boot made with the normal logger heel.

Wesco Boot Size:

U.S. Men's Size:

Wesco Boot Width:

Note: Wesco boots, like many boots, are designed to be worn with boot socks. They are made slightly large to allow for this. So, if your feet measure US Men's size 9 ½ and you wear size 9 ½ dress shoes, then size 9 ½ Wesco boots, worn with boot socks, will fit you correctly.

If your feet are size 12 or longer, the extra room built into the Wesco boots is proportionally less generous than it is in smaller sizes. You might consider ordering your boots a half size large to allow room for expansion of your feet.

As the day goes on, your feet expand a bit. If a size 5 foot expands 1% it grows about 1/4 of a size. A size 16 foot which expands 1% grows 5/8 of a size.

Height of boot:

Height in inches

To determine where the top of the boot will be on your leg, measure up from the heel of your stockinged feet along the back of your leg. This should be done while in a seated position with the knee bent at a 90° angle.

New Boss Engineer boots will initially be at that position. e.g. if you order a 16" boot, it will come up 16" from your heel.

As they break in, unlined engineer boots will drop ½" to 1½" (1.3 cm to 3.8 cm) depending on their original height. Lined boots will stay very close to their initial height.

Wesco warns that the initial height of Wesco pull-on boots, out of the box, can vary ±1" (±2.54 cm) from the specified height. In our experience, there's a high probability that the boots will end up somewhat higher than specified. We have not seen any which were lower.

So, for example, if you've specified 20" boots with the expectation that they will be just at the bend in your knee, they could be up to an inch too high. So it's better to get your boots a bit under the maximum possible height.

Note: Please check your calf size to ensure that your legs will fit comfortably in the shaft of a standard Boss boot. See the calf size chart above and the instructions for measuring your calf circumference on the Boss Engineer Boot page. We can, at extra cost, adjust the size of the boot shafts. That option is shown below.

If there is an extra charge for an option, the price is shown.

Extra Midsoles:

You can add an extra ¼ inch / 6 mm thick midsole which runs from toe to heel and makes the entire sole construction ¼" / 6 mm thicker. This is the extra midsole which is used in the Big Black Boots Super Boss boots. The extra leather midsole is stiffer -- the extra EVA rubber midsole is more flexible and lighter. EVA rubber is the material normally used to make midsoles for boots and athletic shoes.

When this extra midsole is added, the sole assembly is too thick to be sewn all the way through the Vibram outsole which is normal for all Wesco boots. So the boots are built like most other boots. The sole is sewn through the midsole assembly then the outer Vibram outsole is glued on using standard bootmaking procedures. There is one advantage to this... it is easier to replace the outsole when it needs replacement.

Standard Boots - no extra midsole
Extra ¼" / 6 mm EVA rubber midsole ($26)
Extra ¼" / 6 mm leather midsole ($26)
When safety toes are specified on custom orders, only the Vibram #100
or Vibram #430 soles can be used. Also, the boots cannot be made with
the optional extra leather or EVA midsole. Reason is a change in the
        certification / test requirements.

Soles:

The soles below work with all heel heights - Click here to see soles.
Soles are black unless a color is specified in the description.

#100 Vibram Heavy Lug Sole
#430 Vibram Mini-Lug Sole
#700 brown Vibram non-lugged Sole
#100F Vibram Heavy Lug Sole (fire resistant / oil resistant) ( $15 )
#100H Honey Vibram Heavy Lug Sole (tan version of the #100) ( $13 )
#705 brown Vibram retro Half Sole ($33)
Dark Brown Leather with rubber heel ($36)
Caution - these soles are slippery and wear quickly

If you decide to have your boots made with any of the above soles and a heel which is one or two lifts lower or higher, there is a charge to custom build the heels to modify their height.

The Vibram® "Raptor" single piece, cushioned wedge, unisoles below work with low heel heights only -

Vibram Raptor Black Uni-Sole
Vibram Raptor Chocolate Uni-Sole
Vibram Raptor Camel Uni-Sole
Vibram Raptor Malt Uni-Sole

If you decide to have your boots built with these unisoles which have a sole and heel molded in one unit, there is no charge for lowering the heel since the bootmaker doesn't need to build a custom low heel using fewer lifts.

Buckle Choices for Boots with Straps

For boots with straps, you can choose any of the buckle types shown below.
This is a no cost option.

The default is solid nickel buckles on black and slate leather boots and
solid brass plated buckle on all others.

For these custom boots, you can choose the default or specify your choice.

We recommend the roller buckles. These are the type traditionally used on
these engineer boots. They work well and look great. If you're wondering,
the "Ox" in some of the buckle names means they are oxidized to give a
satin / matte appearance.

If you want to mix and match buckle types on the top and instep that would
be a fashion violation but Wesco will do it. Put a note in the remarks.

You can supply your own buckles if you'd like. Email us for instructions.
The instep strap uses ⅞" size - the top strap uses ⅝" size.
They must be center bar buckles.

Finally... if you choose the Wesco logo buckle it's used on the instep strap
and the Solid Nickel buckle is used on the top straps.

Adjustments to boot shaft size:

Big Black Boots is no longer taking orders. We have left most of our site up, including these order forms, because there is a lot of valuable information for customers who are interested in ordering boots direct from Wesco or Dehner. For instance, we have more detailed information about options than the manufacturer's website.

However, we have removed the ability to enter personal or payment information.
